Dear St. Gabriel Parishioners:

  • In the Gospel for the first Sunday of Lent, let us begin with Jesus in the desert. Mark’s version of the temptations of Jesus does not mention three temptations, nor does it say that Jesus fasted. Mark's whole focus is on presenting the temptations of Jesus as part of the great struggle between good and evil, between God and Satan.

Jesus' desert experience raises important questions for us:

What are some of the "desert" experiences I have experienced in my life?

What desert experience am I living through right now?

When and how do I find moments of contemplation in the midst of a busy life?

How have I lived in the midst of my own deserts?

Have I been courageous and persistent in fighting with the demons?

How have I resisted transforming my own deserts into places of abundant life?

  • One of the ways our Lenten Season can be practically meaningful is to support “Home Mission Collection”. This is the support of the U.S. Catholic Church to assist parishes in providing the tools and personnel for passing on our living Faith.  This collection of support will be taken as a second collection at all Masses this weekend February 21 & 22.
  • Congratulation to the newly Elects and Candidate for Full Communion in the Catholic Church (Brittney Garcia, Connor Battoglia, Terry Bender and Jennifer Rivera). These are Catechumens and Candidates who are called and chosen by the head of the local Church to prepare for the Easter Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter Vigil). This past Saturday, February 20, Archbishop Paul Etienne, on behalf of the Church called all the Catechumens and Candidates from our Olympic Deanery, including Gabriel Parish, in a celebration called the “Rite of Election” at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Bremerton.
  • With our own journey of “conversion” in this Lenten Season, please remember to pray in a special way for these newly Elects and Candidates in our parish that they will be more open and readier to prepare for the Easter Sacraments. Their particular path in this Lenten Season will take them through the three “Scrutinieson the third, Fourth and Fifth Sunday of Lent.
  • Please also remember to pray for the Candidates for Confirmation in both of our two parishes Youth Group programs (Junior High and Senior High). These Candidates will be confirmed by one of our Bishops on Saturday, April 17 at both St. Garbiel Parish and Prince of Peace

 At St. Gabriel
